Module summary
What is inclusive education? How does provision for pupils with special educational needs compare with other countries? What can we learn from each other? How can we bring about changes? These are some of the question considered in Special Educational Needs: International perspectives which is a core module for international students studying for the MA(SEN). Selecting this module means you will be part of a group of students from many countries with varied professional backgrounds. They are united by an interest in, and experience of, the educational of pupils with special educational needs. You will track the shifts from segregation to integration and the development of inclusive education. Drawing on the available research, legislation and policies, you will have opportunities to compare and contrast practices in a wide range of countries. You will consider the roles of families and pupil with special educational needs in inclusive education. This module is taught during the daytime in Semester 1. There are preparatory materials for each session and your attention will be drawn to relevant resources. It is planned to offer students some visits to some local educational settings.Objectives
On successful completion of this module, international students will:- be aware of international issues in special education, particularly those surrounding integration and inclusion;
- have knowledge of the range and nature of special educational needs;
- have knowledge of the available placements for special educational needs and how these are managed and organised for effective provision;
- understand the principles involved in the cycle of assessment, decision making and review and in the involvement of pupils, parents and other professionals in this process;
- be able to relate international issues in special education to policy and practice in a specific country.
Syllabus
This module addresses the following issues:
-concepts of special educational need; principles and practice of integration and inclusion in the UK and in international settings;
-the range and nature of special educational needs including children with learning, sensory, physical and behavioural difficulties; an examination of the continuum of special educational needs provision including special and mainstream placement and school effectiveness and school improvement;
-systems for identification, assessment, decision making and review and for the monitoring and evaluation of provision; partnership with parents and other professionals;
-in-depth analysis of the current SEN scene in specific countries.
