Module summary

Studying this module, Teaching children with social emotional and behavioural difficulties, will provide you with an overview of the types of social emotional and behavioural difficulties that learners may experience. You will study the factors that can influence the learners' development and progress. There will be an emphasis on ways in which schools can create positive behaviour and emotional well-being. You will learn about a range of strategies including behaviour policies, classroom management strategies and communication skills. The issues of bullying, truancy and anger management are studied. You will also consider the needs of the teachers who are working with these learners. This module is taught as evening sessions in semester 2. There are preparatory materials and you will be guided towards further reading and resources. The course attracts students from the UK and international students. This means you will learn about the differences and similarities between various countries.

Objectives

On successful completion of the module, teachers will:
- have knowledge and understanding of factors which influence the social, emotional and behavioural development of children;
- understand school-based approaches to promoting positive behaviour and emotional well-being;
- be able to identify key issues in effective classroom management;
- be able to analyse specific methods for managing individual children's difficulties;
- have knowledge of specific topics in the area of emotional and behavioural difficulties such as truancy, bullying, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Syllabus

The module addresses the following themes:
- An overview of the types of social emotional and behavioural difficulties in children including an examination of consistencies and change in children as they develop from early childhood through to adolescence;
- A model of approaches to teaching children with social emotional and behavioural difficulties to include:
> how schools can be organised to promote positive behaviours and reduce incidents of undesirable behaviours,
> how to include behaviour policies, management of change in schools, leadership issues, communication and dissemination of information,
> in-depth investigations into appropriate classroom management practices such as classroom arrangement, establishment of rules and procedures, rewards and punishment, getting the year off to a good start, curriculum considerations, communication skills,
> analysis of approaches to individual social emotional and behavioural difficulties;
- An analysis of the principles upon which interventions are based. This to include behavioural approaches such as applied behavioural analysis, contracts; cognitive approaches such as problem solving and/or self talk, and some forms of counselling;
- Specific topics to include truancy, bullying and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder with reference to management of these difficulties.
