Private study

This module is concerned with developing a critical review of their schools provision for pupils with special educational needs, with an emphasis on the most common difficulties.

The review will need to take into account the perspectives of various stakeholders and analyse the balance between whole school, group and individual approaches. Typically, an action plan will be included in the assignment. 50 hours allowed for this activity.

Completion of the portfolio will require 70 hours.

It is expected that the course participants will network with each other and 30 hours are allowed for this.

Course participants are expected to visit other schools and educational settings. 80 hours are allocated to this.

As part of the Inclusion Development Programme provided by the DCSF, there are a range of on-line materials. It is expected that all the students will access these and consider their relevance to their professional situation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A visit by staff from either the university or the LA will be made to the course participant in their school at the end of the module. The format of the visit will normally involve meeting the course participant and their line manager.
- The LA personnel will have a role in providing in-school support.
- A document providing guidance about roles and responsibilities of the LA, the HEI, the school and the participant will clarify expectations.
- The equivalent of three 2-hour tutorials will be available for each student.
