Objectives
This module gives students an understanding of the analysis, design and operation of smart grid systems, including an appreciation of the specialist techniques required for high voltage power systems engineering.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, the student should have:
Knowledge of the main methods of electricity generation
An appreciation of the electrical parameters of national power grid systems and the need for international interconnection
Knowledge of the theory and design of transmission and distribution networks.
Familiarity with high voltage engineering principles and the grid infrastructure components
An appreciation of smart grid technologies and techniques for the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
Competence in the analysis and modelling of grid systems
Syllabus
Overview of electricity generation techniques
Economic, regulatory and environmental factors
Electric power transmission and distribution networks
High voltage grid infrastructure: transformers, converters, cables, switchgear, control systems
Storage: hydroelectric, battery, supercapacitor, fuel cell
Network interconnection and synchronisation, HVDC links
Grid fault management and protection systems
Demand management and smart metering
Modelling and real-time simulation techniques
