Year running 2015/16
This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental physical, chemical and biological principles of molecular-scale engineering.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding the basic technologies for molecular-scale engineering; and have a good understanding of molecular self-assembly, in particular the role of DNA and proteins for self-assembly applications.
Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have acquired the following skills:
- they will be able to use their analytical skills to solve non-routine molecular-scale engineering problems;
- they will be able to demonstrate and use a high level of analytical problem solving skills and competencies;
- they will be able to find and retrieve literature concerning a subject in the wider field of molecular-scale engineering, extract the relevant information, and summarize the findings in an accurate and succinct way.
Syllabus
The aim of the module is to examine recent progress basic technologies for molecular-scale engineering, and potential techniques for directed assembly of complex molecular structures.
- The first half of the course covers inorganic techniques: molecular conduction, conducting polymers, and graphitic structures (including carbon nanotubes and graphene).
- The second half covers organic techniques, including: DNA and proteins as nanoscale assembly tools, and biologically-templated functional structures.
