This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to: Understand the fundamental principles of digital signal processing; Discuss a large number of applications of DSP in communications, including important parameters, limitations, etc.; Use the mathematical theories of DSP for both analysis and design; Use DSP to process signals that derive from random processes;Explain and use the basic theory of the LMS adaptive filter; Discuss advantages/disadvantages of various DSP implementations; Understand how DSP algorithms can enhance the performance of cellular mobile radio.

Syllabus

Why DSP? Discrete-time signals and systems; z-transforms; DFT/FFT; 1-D and 2-D filters; filter structures; finite wordlength effects; random processes; spectral analysis, including high resolution techniques; optimal signal processing; adaptive signal processing; implementation considerations (DSP chip, ASIC or FPGA); emerging areas: smart antennas, space-time processing and blind equalisation; case studies of DSP in communications to be taken from: source coding for voice and images (e.g. CELP and MPEG), pulse shaping, channel equalisation, adaptive noise and echo cancellation, adaptive antennas and multi-user detection, implementation of OFDM and DSP for software radio.
