Year running 2015/16

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of this module students will:

- To understand in general how these ideas/principles can be applied to any modern System on Chip. - To appreciate the different levels of simulation/implementation from Matlab through C down to Assembly language.
- To gain an understanding into how DSP algorithms are implemented in practice on a System-on-chip, understanding both all the advantages and the limitations.
- To design and develop relevant and appropriate DSP applications and implement them on a development platform (e.g. ARM or DSP).

Learning outcomes
The student should (upon completion of this model):
- understand the various options for DSP implementation;
- understand the operation of System-on-Chip development systems;
- understand aspects of operation of the embedded processor architectures;
- understand how to use support tools to design and implement specified case studies.

Syllabus

Understanding the various options for System-on-Chip implementation - ASIC, FPGA and DSP chips.
- Appreciating the various aspects of a EDA system including support programs, design environment, compilers, assembler, linker.
- Understanding of the limitations and advantages of the architecture and instruction set hard processor.
- Use of EDA support tools.
- Case studies and design problems, taken from (for example) digital filters and audio processing.

Private study

Students are expected to read extensively in order to understand and complete the mini projects and the main project. The project will be partly carried out in timetabled classes and partly in the students' own time.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students progress is monitored by assessment of the four mini-projects and by regular inspection of their log-book record of the project.
