Objectives
The Industrial Placement module aims to provide a structured and supported work experience that seeks to develop and enhance transferable skills and an understanding of organisations and the workplace environment.Learning outcomes
- apply their specialist knowledge and understanding gained during their studies into the workplace context
- demonstrate enhanced practical knowledge, experience and skill in areas such as commerce, manufacturing and research relevant to their programme of study
- understand how to apply their work-based learning to other areas of personal development, including academic performance
- present their skills and knowledge effectively to prospective employers
- reflect on experiences and identify their own strengths and areas for development
- demonstrate an understanding of employment and career opportunities
Skills outcomes
The Industrial Placement will provide opportunity to develop a set of transferable skills. On completion of the placement, students should be able to show evidence of the following skills:

Syllabus
Students will have a minimum of nine months to a maximum of twelve months work placement/s (max 2 placements), either between levels 2 and 3 or levels 3 and 4, where they will work on challenging projects and produce clear, yet concise, written report/s in an appropriate format. The placement will be agreed by the student, the Industrial Placement Tutor and the Workplace Supervisor prior to the commencement of the placement, and will address the module objectives. Following the placement/s, and on their return to the University, the student will produce a report evaluating and evidencing their skills development, and give an oral presentation based on their placement experience.
Private study
Total number of hours to include:- Preparing CV, indentifying companies, making applications, preparing for and attending interviews
- Pre-placement briefings and workshops
- Completing all necessary administration prior to placement
- Placement
- Site visit meeting with Industrial Placement Tutor
- Completing the Industrial Placement Report
- Oral presentation
- Completing all necessary administration after the placement
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Pre-placement: students attend relevant presentations and meet with Careers Centre / Industrial Placement Tutor / Personal Tutor to satisfy their specific requirements.On-placement: students will be monitored continuously through regular contact between the Industrial Placement Tutor and the Workplace Supervisor. The Industrial Placement Tutor will visit the workplace at least once during the first half of the placement (where possible).

In the event of a report not meeting pass standard, students will be permitted the opportunity to resubmit the report, or elements within the report, as appropriate, within one month of receiving their result.
