Objectives

- To encourage students to develop a knowledge and understanding of the key debates surrounding the social, cultural and political geographies of cosmopolitanism, nationalism, identity and encounter.
- To enable students to use the above knowledge to analyse real-world experiences of cosmopolitanism within the British context.
- To encourage students to appreciate the diverse, dynamic and contested nature of debates surrounding the future of cosmopolitan Britain.
- To facilitate the development of transferable skills in the retrieval, analysis and presentation of information in written and digital formats.

Learning outcomes
1. An understanding of the key theories on identity formation, cosmopolitanism, social encounters, nationalism, tolerance and prejudice.
2. The relationships between encounters and identity formation.
3. The role of social, economic and cultural factors in experiences of and attitudes towards others.
4. The relationship between emotional geographies of belonging (at a range of different spatial scales) and experiences of nationalism and cosmopolitanism.
5. An understanding of the key debates and social and political processes influencing the future of nationalism and cosmopolitanism in British social and political life.
6. An appreciation of the role of micro-publics, as potential sites of (meaningful) encounter, in future relations between Britain’s diverse communities.
