Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:-acquire knowledge and understanding of a specific topic in medieval history through the use and analysis of primary and secondary materials;
- synthesise the results of such work to produce a coherent and extended piece of historical writing.
As a result of this exercise students acquire knowledge of research methods appropriate to the particular subject they have addressed. The inclusion of the compulsory skills module MEDV5120M as an element of the core training means that students will acquire research skills in semester one through a series of assessed assignments and scheduled seminar work.
Learning outcomes
This module helps to develop the following skills to advanced levels:
- clear definition a complex problem
- knowledge to locate and handle appropriate primary source material
- self-discipline to work alone on a major self-directed project
- interpretation and analysis of complex documentary-based material
- in-depth research of a topic using methods appropriate to the discipline and subject matter, and
- articulate presentation of findings in an extended written report conforming to academic norms.
Syllabus
This dissertation module consists of regular meetings with the supervisor of the project.
