Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- discuss, evaluate and critically assess different definitions of enlightenment;
- show an advanced critical awareness of the historiography of the enlightenment;
- identify, analyse and assess the significance of the main streams of enlightenment thought;
- discuss the place of the enlightenment within social and cultural contexts.

Syllabus
This module will consider the enlightenment within its social and cultural contexts, paying special attention to recent historiographical trends. In particular students will be invited to consider recent work on the diffusion of ideas in the public sector and how it has affected our understanding of the impact and penetration of the enlightenment.
Individual seminars will explore topics such as:
- ways of conceiving the enlightenment;
- the enlightenment's social context;
- print and the public sphere;
- the enlightenment and religion;
- enlightenment and the state and counter-enlightenments.
Enlightenment attitudes to science, society, gender, and non-European societies will also be examined.
