Objectives
The unit aims to provide an understanding of:* the functioning of a reactor;
* the management of a nuclear facility;
* the problems associated with waste storage and disposal
* the physics of the actinides

* Students successfully completing this unit should be able to:
* Prepare and present a research poster.
* Prepare a review paper
* Prepare a communication paper
* Critically analyze a research publication
* Understand how a reactor works
* Understand the processes that occur at Sellafield
* Understand the aqueous chemistry of the actinides

* Students successfully completing this unit should be able to:
* Synthesise their knowledge of a particular topic and use it to produce a research poster.
* Synthesise the information found in from a literature review to produce a review paper.
* Extract the salient points from a set of data and prepare a scientific communication.
* Perform a critical analysis of research publication via a short report

Syllabus
During the course of this unit the students will:
* Visit a working reactor
* Have a site visit to Sellafeld
* Attend the Nuclear FiRST Winter School
* Present a poster at the Winter School
* Critically analyse a number of scientific publications
* Learn how to write a review and a communication paper
