Learning outcomes
This unit aims to introduce the students about the application of molecular biology to a commercial setting. By introducing the students to some specific examples of biotechnology companies, the students will be introduced to the successes and failures of molecular biology in this context.
The students will be introduced to IP both in general terms and more specifically as managed by University's in the UK. In addition the significance of IP in creating value and facilitating the growth of contemporary biotechnology companies will be explained through lectures, seminars, some of which will be delivered by experts in the field. Finally, the political drivers associated with translational research in the UK and globally will be discussed and all of these components will inform the students business planning project which will form the basis of a significant part of the evaluation of this course.
