Objectives

This module aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of Occupational Psychology, and the contribution this can make to the effective management of people in the workplace. It explores a variety of factors influencing behaviour and well-being, relating to individuals and groups within organisations and the overall psychological environment (climate/culture) of the organisation. It will demonstrate the contribution of psychological theories and concepts to the study of human behaviour in work organisations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- theory and research concerning the relationship between human behaviour and different work environments
- critical perspective on the theory and research in terms of the quality of ideas and the methodologies applied
- the practical implications of the theory and research findings for Human Resource Management

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Apply accurately and with originality skills of analysis and critical thinking, marshalling relevant evidence and examples to support an argument
- Plan and organise team working and individual tasks in challenging situations within time constraints, including expressing knowledge and understanding in written form


Syllabus

Indicative content
The first semester will focus on the underlying principles of Occupational Psychology and central HR practices, including individual differences, recruitment and training.

The second semester will consider a number of important organisational practices and a variety of outcomes from an Occupational Psychology perspective, including job design, teamworking and well-being.

Private study

Throughout the module students are required to conduct some further reading (as guided by the reading list provided) to develop their knowledge of the field beyond that provided in seminars. In order to write their essays, students are expected to build upon this core knowledge by searching (e.g., using on line literature searching facilities) for the very latest literature relevant to their essay topic, particularly primary material in journals.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be able to reflect on their progress through feedback from their first assignment, and through participation in both class discussions and the tasks/activities contained within the teaching sessions.
