Objectives
Understand the application of design to the medical engineering industry. Design the different aspects of a medical device, initial conceptual, performance prediction, vehicle sizing leading onto detail design of the different aerospace vehicle systems.Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, student will be able to:
- Work as part of a team in the design of a medical device
- Understand the application of design for a medical device
- Determine the specification of a medical device using information given and own research
- Specify appropriate tests to demonstrate the functionality of the device
- Suggest the appropriate regulatory pathway for the device designed to take the device to market
Syllabus
Students will undertake a mixture of traditional lectures, seminars, and practical sessions as well as working on their own time to complete assigned tasks. Several tasks will be completed each contributing towards the final grade.

Private study
Private study will be undertaken by the student in order to understand the practical application for which the design will be focussed. This will take the form of basic scientific understanding from library textbooks in various subject areas and detailed specific learning from published research articles through the library’s on-line resources. The student will be required to conduct their own background review of the literature and to interpret this with an engineering perspective. Methods of assessment
