An UG or PG degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Biological Sciences

Objectives

This module aims to provide detailed understanding of a selected research area, in the form of 3 cross disciplinary laboratory placements, each of 3 weeks, where the students explore possible project areas within Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and Medical Engineering in order to relate this research to their chosen research area.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, participants should:
- appreciate the interdisciplinary environment;
- be aware of a wide range of techniques available for Tissue Engineering and Medical Engineering research;
- formulate some preliminary ideas of conducing a research project;
- make an informed decision of PhD project.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
(a) have an appreciation of literature background to their area of research and placement;
(b) be able to formulate hypotheses to be tested experimentally;
(c) keep an accurate, formal record of research performed;
(d) be able to plan new experiments in light of earlier results;
(e) apply key methods to the investigation of problems and/or develop new methodology;
(f) be able to interpret experimental data and to develop new models on the basis of these experiments;
(g) disseminate research results.


Syllabus

Students will complete a 3 week placement in 3 laboratories each from the following:
1) Tissue Engineering
2) Biotribiology
3) Immunology
4) 4D Engineering
5) Stem Cells
6) Gait
7) Synthetic Scaffolds
8) Dental
9) Soft Tissue testing.
10) Computer modelling
11) Histology
