Module summary

On completion of this module, students should:(a) have an appreciation of background to their area of research(b) be able to formulate hypotheses to be tested experimentally;(c) be able to developed smart aims and objectives(d) be able to plan new experiments

Objectives

This module aims to provide training in planning a programme of research and preparing a complete research proposal in the form of a grant proposal Case for Support. This should be based on your chosen PhD project and will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the research project that you have selected.

On completion of this module, students should have:

- Gained experience in grant proposal writing and project planning.
- Defined the aims and objectives of their research project.
- Developed an in depth understanding of their chosen PhD research proposal, including methodologies to be utilised in the research.


Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, participants should have:
- Developed a clear understanding of their chosen research project
- An understanding of the relevant literature
- Defined clearly the aims and objectives of their chosen research project
- Developed project planning skills
- Developed an understanding of the experimental or computational techniques they may use in their research
- Developed an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of research in the medical and tissue engineering area


Syllabus

Students will complete a 2000 word literature review, followed by a grant proposal and work plan for their PhD research project.

This module will commence in June after other formal taught modules and exams have been completed. Successful completion is necessary to commence work on the students chosen PhD project and associated laboratory/computational work in year 2 of the programme.

Project proposal
During the remaining summer months (July and August), students will write a full research (grant) proposal, outlining the work they will undertake during the course of their PhD research project. The students should demonstrate a clear understanding of the background literature to their research projects, recognition of the problem they are addressing and include details of their experimental plans. In addition, they should state clearly what the predicted outcomes of the study are and who the main beneficiaries of the study will be.
