Pre-requisite qualifications

An appropriate 3 year undergraduate course which includes taught subjects of Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

To give an understanding of the basic principles of combustion processes and their application to engines used in transport and power generation.

Syllabus

- Introduction: Nature of combustion in various engines, applications, performance and environmental issues;
- Combustion fundamentals: Combustion chemistry, laminar and turbulent premixed flames, diffusion and droplet flames;
- Combustion in SI engines: Turbulent flame propagation, equilibrium cycle, modelling, fuel composition, autoignition, knock and emissions;
- Combustion in CI engines: Ignition delay, air motion, turbulence, injection methods, diesel fuel composition, gaseous and soot emissions, cycle modelling.
