Objectives

- To conduct an individual laboratory or analytical project in Molecular Medicine in a strong research active environment
- To implement an approved experimental plan whilst working as part of a research group
- To gain experience of a range of scientific methodologies
- To be able to report scientific findings both verbally and in writing

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to provide evidence that they can:
- Implement a study protocol to address a specific Molecular Medicine research question;
- Work safely and in a professional manner in a research laboratory or other Molecular Medicine research environment;
- Demonstrate sound familiarity with specific experimental techniques applicable to Molecular Medicine;
- Identify potential sources of experimental and measurement error and develop strategies to minimise such error;
- Collect and store scientific data securely and ethically;
- Choose and apply appropriate statistical tests in the analysis of research data;
- Critically interpret their own research data;
- Write scientifically placing novel research in a broader context;
- Present their research as a poster and verbally.


Syllabus

Students will conduct an original, independent research project after approval of a project proposal developed with a named supervisor.

Private study

Private study includes progressive reading on the topic, experimental design, data analysis and preparation of the project report.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Routine monitoring by individual supervisors in conjunction with a reflective log of such 'tutorial' meetings.

Draft of research project report to be considered by supervisor 2 weeks ahead of submission date.

The programme does not follow standard semester dates. The seminar day for verbal & poster presentations will be held during the final full week of July. The submission date for the project report & reflective log will be the second Wednesday of August.
