Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. carry out basic design research activities and use it to inform design activities.
2. formulate design requirements and use them to inform design evaluations.
3. communicate conceptual design ideas by means of sketches using pencil, colour markers and/or other appropriate tools with elementary proficiency;
4. analyse a mass produced consumer product and identify its product structure (using exploded drawing and/or bill of materials) and key manufacturing processes for making different parts;
5. design simple products using standard parts;
6. operate image editing and vector graphics software packages to perform basic tasks;
7. operate a computer aided design software package to produce simple 3D solid models;
8. build simple design protypes using cardboard, foam, other soft materials and 3D printed components;
9. produce simple project plans to facilitate the management of team tasks;
10. conduct focus group studies
In addition, students will learn how to operate effectively as a member of a small collocated team and present their design work orally using audio visual aids where appropriate
- Describe of a typical new product introduction process and aware the plurality of current practices across industry;
- Produce simple 3D models, using a computer aided design software, that are suitable for downstream manufacturing.
Syllabus
This is the project core through which students will draw together learning from a range of disciplines and apply it to design projects. In addition, students will develop skills that they will need to practice effectively in the design industry.
The module will provide knowledge and skills needed for basic design work and to create design models.
This will include the following:
- sketching, rendering and basic presentation package skills;
- basic model-making and protyping skills;
- basic computer aided design skills;
- a high level framework for the execution of design processes;
- experience of carrying out design projects within the context of at least one framework;
- integration of other module content into a design context;
- task management and basic project planning;
- sensory perception;
- colour: theory, hue, intensity, hot, cold, colour perception, colour blindness, style
- Identifying customer needs.
- Requirements definition.
- Conducting a focus group.
- Product architecture.
- Concept selection.
- Detail design and design for manufacture including dimensioning of drawing in orthographic projection.
- Physical prototyping: concept model and working model.
- Solid modelling practice.
- Human centric design.
- Human factors and ergonomics.
- Product usability.
- Design evaluation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Registers are taken in all studio sessions. Coursework is marked and feedback is given at regular intervals throughout the year. Semester 1 performance is reviewed in February and under performing students are contacted.Methods of assessment
