Objectives
After taking this course students will be able to:- understand the significance and importance of different rock and soil types, and their characteristics in engineering construction and design;
- appreciate the importance of discontinuities and their characteristics;
- understand the basis for strength and other index properties of both intact rock, rock masses, single discontinuities and soil;
- undertake geotechnical assessments;
- undertake preliminary design of a Site Investigation;
- provide an engineering description of rocks and soils;
- recognise and understand slope instability in soils and rocks;
- analyse slopes for stability;
- suggest remedial measures;
- recognise and understand potential hazards related to earthquakes
- appreciate the geotechnical considerations required to reduce the earthquake risk to structures
