Module replaces

Part of SOEE5128 and combines geophysical reservoir evaluation with new material on recent developments in seismic reservoir characterisation

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

The purpose of this module is to provide an understanding of the kinds of seismic features that can be identified by seismic attributes, the sensitivity of seismic attributes to rock physical, petro-physical and fluid properties. New developments in seismic reservoir characterisation are also provided, with special attention to an overview of the fundamentals of time-lapse seismic technology, passive seismic monitoring, seismic geomechanics and seismic characterisation of unconventional reservoirs.

Objectives

Seismic reservoir evaluation: understand the use of rock physics models to assess variations in reservoir characteristics such as fluid saturation, lithology and pressure prediction. Use amplitude versus offset (AVO), acoustic and elastic inversion and geostatistics in the analysis of hydrocarbon reservoirs; be aware of seismic methods for assessing fractured reservoirs via seismic anisotropy and converted-wave methodologies. Understand the reasons for and the techniques used for predicting pore pressure.

Recent Developments: understand the principles of acquiring, processing and interpreting time-lapse (4D) seismic data for reservoir characterisation, understand the application of passive seismic data for reservoir characterisation and fracture stimulation for unconventional reservoirs

Learning outcomes
After completion of the module, students will be able to understand principles and applications of seismic attributes for reservoir characterisation and hydrocarbon evaluation. The learning outcomes will be assessed using seismic practicals and unseen exam.

Syllabus

Seismic Reservoir Evaluation: use of rock physics models and Gassman's equation to understand the link between the petrophysical properties of reservoirs and seismic attributes. Describe the use of amplitude versus offset (AVO), acoustic and elastic impedance inversion, fracture analysis, seismic anisotropy and geostatistics in reservoir assessment. Study techniques for pressure prediction in a reservoir.

Recent Developments: time-lapse (4D) seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation, saturation versus pressure signatures, seismic geomechanics; passive seismic methods and interferometry; seismics of unconventional reservoirs
