Module summary

A coverage of important issues in contemporary Middle East politics on the domestic, regional and international levels.

Objectives

To access major themes in domestic Middle East politics. Some major regional issues and the foreign policies of the US, European Union and Russia.

Learning outcomes
To acquaint students with a good range of knowledge about issues in the Middle East politics.

Skills outcomes
Time management, communication, organisation, skills in arguments, punctuality, interpersonal dealing.


Syllabus

Rather than covering a wide range of developments in the Middle East since 1945, the module will study selected issues in several Middle Eastern states, several contemporary regional themes and contemporary policies of great powers in the area.

Among the domestic issues to be studied are: secularism in Turkey, leadership and local politics in the Islamic republic, identity problem in Iraq. Embedded in its regional themes will be the Middle East peace process, regional dimensions of the Kurdish question, Islamic radicalism and Gulf security. Also, the policies of the US, Russia and EU since the cold war will be studied.
