Objectives

To introduce the methods appropriate to the study of human heredity, and the more significant findings especially in relation to medicine and the human sciences.

Syllabus

- Human genome analysis and human genome project;
- Physical mapping, linkage analysis using lod scores and gene mapping;
- Human genetic variation, normal and pathological; sex chromosomes, chromosomal abbreviations including those for sex chromosomes;
- RFLPs; polymorphism involving repeated sequences -VNTRs; DNA finger printing and its applications - medical and forensic;
- Complex inheritance and quantitative characters;
- The genetics of cancer;
- Human cytogenetics: FISH analysis;
- Medical genetics; prenatal diagnosis, genetic counselling;
- Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
