Objectives
At the end of the module, students will have a detailed understanding of the science and engineering that underlies current nuclear operations, within the UK and worldwide.Learning outcomes
Students will develop an understanding of:
- nuclear physics
- nuclear chemistry
- the manifestation of nuclear physics and chemistry in the underlying principles of nuclear operations
- operations in the nuclear industry as component of an integrated nuclear fuel cycle.
Syllabus
Principles of nuclear physics:
- fission
- fusion
- nuclear reactor principles and how these are based on nuclear physics.
Principles of nuclear radiochemistry:
- Principles of nuclear operations
- Reactor operation
- Spent fuel treatment and disposal
- Comparison of UK versus international practices
- Nuclear waste treatment
- Nuclear safety
- Reactor decommissioning
- Legacy decommissioning
- Decontamination
Practical skills: 5 related laboratory exercises.
