Module summary

This module provides an introduction to the key renewable technologies (excluding biomass): wind, solar, hydro, ocean, and geothermal. Comparative and broader energy topics are also covered: policy, trends, and financial and carbon costing.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are:
- to deliver an introduction to the technology, application, and resource for the main renewable energy technologies, enabling the students to solve technology-specific problems;
- to deliver a broader context of renewable technology, enabling the students to address open-ended technology-comparative questions;
- to guide the students' completion of critical literature reviews, enhancing research skills and extending research knowledge;
- to support student group work for completion of group brief report and presentation, enhancing team work and communication skills.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- have a broad knowledge of renewable energy trends, drivers, and policy;
- have the ability to perform comparative calculations regarding renewable energy resource, capacity, storage, costs, and carbon;
- have detailed knowledge of solar, wind, hydroelectric, ocean, and geothermal energy technologies;
- have the ability to solve detailed technology-specific renewable energy problems;
- have developed the ability to critically review scientific literature;
- have improved scientific writing skills;
- have developed team working, communication, and presentation skills.

Syllabus

Introduction to renewable energy - technology overview, capacity factors, carbon intensity, levelised costs, energy trends, energy policy, commercial awareness.
Solar energy - solar resource, photovoltaics, solar thermal, system technology.
Wind energy - wind resource, turbine aerodynamics, system technology.
Hydroelectric and ocean energy - energy resource, hydroelectric schemes, wave power, tidal power, system technology.

Private study

Independent online learning:
Each week students will complete an online MCQ, extending the lecture material. This is formative assessment, and will not count towards module marks. Feedback will be provided in the subsequent lecture. (approximately 20 hours)

Private study:
Review of lecture notes (approximately 60 hours)
Exam revision (approximately 40 hours)
Preparation and writing of critical literature reviews (approximately 40 hours)
Preparation and writing of group report and group presentation (approximately 40 hours)
Directed reading of texts recommended in lectures (approximately 30 hours)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The primary formative assessment will be the online MCQ, which will cover material delivered during the lectures and extended online. The students also complete three assessed critical literature reviews during semester 1 and semester 2, and complete a group brief report and group presentation at the end of semester 2, which will further help monitor student progress.
