Year running 2015/16
Pre-requisite qualifications
Level 2 in Medicinal Chemistry or equivalentThis module is not approved as a discovery module
Objectives
On completion of the module students will be equipped with some of the key skills required for research in organic chemistry, and will be able to:- undertake advanced experimental work, with due attention to safety, in the chemical laboratory;
- manipulate advanced apparatus and record data for subsequent analysis;
- synthesize molecules of some structural complexity;
- determine structure using spectroscopic data
- undertake advanced independent experimental work, with due attention to safety, and demonstrate the ability to write clear, scientific reports.
Syllabus
Students will undertake a selection of experiments in the organic chemistry laboratories appropriate to the level 3 theory modules and to the general development of advanced laboratory technique, including the completion of COSHH forms, use of databases and the chemical literature to search for precedented transformations, the use of a laboratory notebook to record experimental observations, the proposal of procedures for simple transformations and for the purification of organic compounds.
