Module summary
The aim of this module is to allow practitioners to critically analyse their role and the role of the multi-agency team in the management of organ donation and the management of patients requiring organ transplantation. Issues covered will include immunology, immunosuppression, organ donation: live and cadaveric, ethical aspects, specific patient care and psychological reactions to organ transplantation.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to:- critically examine how care activities are assigned, supervised and monitored in the environment;
- demonstrate a critical appraisal of clinical evidence for decision making in practice;
- examine the mechanisms by which a range of identified pathologies effect the normal immune system and immunosuppression;
- respond flexibly to changing situations and deliver effective interventions for the organ donor and recipient and their family;
- critically examine how care activities are assigned, supervised and monitored in the transplant care environment;
- demonstrate critical thinking and decision making skills in their practice;
- outline the fundamental principles of rehabilitation for the transplant patient considering service user/ carer experiences;
- critically evaluate the role and function of the multidisciplinary team with respect to the management of the patient in need of organ transplantation and their long tern health needs;
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the principles of managing the organ transplant recipient acknowledging their diverse backgrounds whilst being cared for within a transplant unit and following discharge.

- The principles of tissue typing and how this affects allocation of organs

- Psychosocial effects of transplantation on the individual
