Students will need to be in or have access to a workplace/practice setting. This can be either in business or in education.This module is approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module is for those students who are or will be involved with coaching and mentoring others in a workplace/practice setting.It will be delivered in 2 parts: - part 1 will seek to differentiate between the roles of coaching and mentoring and to critically explore theories and models available. In this section ethical issues will also be considered. - In part 2 students will look at a current or past situation, and then at the practical interpersonal skills required in such roles.Objectives
The aim of this module is to enable students to take on a coaching and mentoring role within a workplace/practice setting.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will have acquired knowledge about:
- similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring
- being able to critically evaluate theories and models around coaching and mentoring
- ethical issues concerned in such roles
- practical interpersonal skills around being an effective coach or mentor.
Skills outcomes
Improved skills in: listening, reflection, giving feedback, summarising, action planning and developing others' potential.
Syllabus
In this module students will be introduced to the similarities and differences between coaching and mentoring. They will critically evaluate the theories and models available to them and will be encouraged to consider how these map on to their own practice.
Students will also become aware of the ethical issues concerned in such roles. They will have the opportunity to look at a current or past situation they face or have faced, as well as to practice the interpersonal skills required. Students will be expected to reflect critically on their own performance through keeping a log/blog.

- Preparing Presentation: 8 hours
