Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate a critical awareness of alternative research methods
- understand how research projects are designed, managed and delivered
- be aware of the different approaches to writing research papers
- design a research project
- write a research proposal
- conduct a literature search for relevant literature
- demonstrate understanding of the various potential methods of data collection
- demonstrate understanding of data analysis methods
- conduct critical evaluation of research strategies, methods of data collection and analysis.

Syllabus

- Alternative approaches to research within the social sciences in general and finance in particular. This begins with an appreciation of the different approaches and the various stages and strategies involved in designing and implementing a research project, and writing and disseminating research articles and reports.
- Conducting a literature review.
- Collecting data: primary data and secondary data, data collection methods - data harvesting, interviews, questionnaires, participant observation.
- Choice of appropriate data analysis method, including software packages, for quantitative and qualitative methods and their implementation.
- Writing up a research proposal and research project. The particular focus will be on research projects in the fields of accounting, finance and financial institutions.

Private study

Technical demonstrations on the use of statistical software for each session will be recorded as videos which will be used as independent online learning materials. Students need to complete practical exercises for each session applying the technique learned from the lecture and the online demo. Students will have opportunities to ask questions in the seminars.
