Objectives

The module provides an understanding of the operation, challenges and issues facing the world’s international financial institutions and markets, with a focus on development, reform and policy. The course assumes an international perspective with numerous cross-country comparisons in terms of regulation, institutions and policies.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically assess:
- the key theories of financial crises and their links with the theories of financial intermediation
- theories of financial regulation and the problems within regulations
- the role of financial regulation in the financial system
- differences across financial systems and their implications for the real economy

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- apply theoretical and analytical tools to real world issues to address and solve problems

- communicate complex banking concepts and methods
- apply critical thinking to address a range of topics in financial regulation

6. The Eurozone-debt crisis
7. Bank Failures
8. Islamic Banking
9. Banking systems in China and India
10. Mergers & Acquisitions in the banking industry
