Module summary

This module aims to integrate your knowledge of entrepreneurship, corporate venturing and social enterprise with new venture creation. Your learning will be supported by lectures, tutorials, case studies, guest speakers and practical (group and individual) exercises. This module will help you appreciate the process of new venture creation within the context of your own enterprise skills and the theory of entrepreneurship.

Objectives

This module aims to integrate knowledge of entrepreneurship, corporate venturing and social enterprise with new venture creation. It will help create an advanced understanding of the process of new venture creation within the context of enterprise skills and the theory of entrepreneurship.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- The new enterprise creation process, including: researching, developing and communicating new business ideas
- Theory relating to entrepreneurship relevant to the economic and social context in which it occurs
- How groups develop and deliver agreed outcomes in addressing business problems and management challenges

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
Subject specific skills
- Assume entrepreneurial skills and in-depth commercial awareness
- Assess and report on personal skills and attributes in these areas

Transferable Skills
- Self-manage a research project
- Work effectively in a team
- Communicate to an advanced level both in writing and through oral presentation

Private study

The module has a core text and a recommended supplementary edited book of readings. There will also be a reading list of contemporary journal articles.

In order to contribute to the workshop sessions and independent learning, students will be expected to read the academic literature, newspapers and online media relating to entrepreneurship and enterprise. Typically 60 hours.

Student groups will also work on a new enterprise creation exercise. Typically 30 hours.

Students will work independently on an assignment, which will draw on the module content and reading. Typically 30 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be expected at every lecture, tutorial and workshop session and non-attendance without good reason will be followed up. Progress issues will be addressed informally during the interactive tutorial sessions. Students will be encouraged to contribute to discussions in lectures and present ideas during the tutorials.
