Objectives

This module aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the empirical and theoretical research literature in the areas of personnel selection and training. Through considering the practical issues associated with implementing personnel selection and training systems and processes, students will be able to apply their knowledge in an organizational environment while working as consultants and/or researchers in their subsequent careers.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to and critically evaluate:
- personnel selection and training as integrated processes for achieving competence
- each stage of the personnel selection and training processes
- the main methods of job analysis, personnel selection, and training delivery
- the concepts of reliability, validity, and utility in personnel selection and training contexts, for the purpose of evaluation
- competency theories and apply them to personnel selection and training delivery

Skills outcomes
Upon completing this module, students will be able to:

- Design original research studies

Subject specific
- Design personnel selection tests and training processes to assess and improve specific competencies, and critically evaluate their reliability, validity, and effectiveness

This is a core compulsory module on the MSc Organizational Psychology and MSc Business Psychology programmes, and the future MA Organizational Behaviour programme, addressing content within three of the six syllabus areas identified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) for their MSc programme accreditation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive informal feedback on their learning during the practical exercises. Furthermore, the lectures will be interactive and student questions will be encouraged throughout. Formally, they will receive feedback on their coursework assignment performance.
