Module summary

This module draws on the underpinning theories of enterprise and entrepreneurship introduced in LUBS 5525M Enterprise Awareness and New Venture Creation. It aims to give you an in-depth, critical understanding of how these theories relate to specific cases and time to reflect on how the experience of others may be used to inform decisions. Your learning will be centred around the application of theory into practice supported through interactice workshops, case studies and reflective exercises through which you will have the opportunity to consider your own business cases and how it relates to the academic discipline of enterprise.

Objectives

This module aims to give students an in-depth, critical understanding of how central enterprise theories relate to specific cases and time to reflect on how the experience of others may be used to inform decisions.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate enterprise & entrepreneurship theories and concepts using techniques relevant to the discipline
- Apply and evaluate theory and practice in their own research, advanced scholarship or area of specific interest within the broader discipline
- Creatively formulate, evaluate and communicate ideas to peers, tutors and others
- Be reflective in applying understanding of theory to real cases
- Engage in entrepreneurial activity (in their own enterprise or in other places of work) resulting in the creation of economic and/or social value

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Syllabus

The general outline of the syllabus is included below:
Day 1: Revisiting theory and understanding relevance, sourcing knowledge
Day 2: The gap between theory, practice and policy
Day 3: Application of theory to a live case
Day 4: Informing research agendas, communicating across stakeholders
Day 5: Reflection on experience
Learning is centred on the application of theory into practice supported through interactive workshops, case studies and reflective exercises to allow students to apply their understanding of central enterprise theories to a specific case study.

Private study

Students will be expected to read the academic literature, newspapers and online media relating enterprise and entrepreneurial theory (5 x 20 hours reading in preparation for workshops [100]).

Students will also work on applying their knowledge to a specific case study and prepare individual assessments (140 hours).

Throughout, students will be required to keep up-to-date with an online (VLE) class blog/discussion board in between sessions. (10 x 2 hours [20]).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be expected at every session, and non-attendance without good reason followed up. Issues will be addressed during the interactive sessions. Personal development and progression through the course will be monitored through online activities.
