Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to:1. demonstrate an understanding of available research methods;
2. critically evaluate the conceptual and methodological strengths and limitations of a number of approaches to research and, where appropriate, make an informed choice for their own project;
3. trace previous and current research in their area of interest;
4. design a research methodology, including an appropriate monitoring and evaluation strategy; and
5. plan the reporting and dissemination of a research project.
Syllabus
The aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to identify, select and utilise research tools and approaches. In doing so, students will critically evaluate the usefulness of such tools for work-based projects. Coverage will include topics selected from: concepts. theories, perspectives related to the student's area of interest; bias and issues of race, class and gender; research design basic concepts, experimental design; data collection and analysis techniques; identification of practical problems; the nature of evidence; sources of evidence; ethical issues in research; techniques for generating data; sampling; standard research techniques; scales and indices; data analysis/analysis of evidence; statistical methods; managing a research project tools and techniques; monitoring and evaluating a research project; application of IT: software packages; searching the Internet.
