Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Design a feasible project plan which:
a) identifies a suitable work-based project whilst showing awareness of limits of current relevant knowledge
b) formulates any problems to be addressed, recognising and, if appropriate, challenging relevant professional boundaries and norms
c) identifies personal learning needs and outlines a strategy for addressing perceived gaps in skills and knowledge
d) provides a rationale for the project plan
e) specifies a systematic approach employing concepts, information and research methodologies appropriate to the project
f) identifies and addresses constraints related to time, quality and cost

2. Implement the planned project in the workplace:
a) responding creatively to unforeseen flaws in the plan or unpredicted difficulties in the workplace
b) applying appropriate analytical techniques to data generated
c) evaluating the contribution of colleagues and discussing how difficulties in the workplace have been addressed

3. Produce a project report which:
a) brings a critical perspective to both the planning and implementation of the project, and the analysis of the findings, and, where appropriate, relates them to previous studies
b) evaluates the success of the project
c) indicates the short-term and longer-term benefits of the project to the organisation

4. Reflect upon the learning experience, identify and critically evaluate how new skills and knowledge may be transferred and utilised in the workplace and within the organisation.

Syllabus

The aim of the module is to enable students to acquire and apply the skills necessary to complete a workplace project within a structured format.

This will entail students planning, implementing and evaluating a project in the workplace which has been negotiated with his/her line manager and the WBL Unit.The student will also be expected to utilise the advice and support of a workplace mentor appointed by the employing organisation.

The students will receive teaching support through structured sessions. The content of the taught sessions will include:

Techniques for Project Planning
Introduction to Research Skills in the workplace
Effective communication skills for the workplace
Developing effective working relationships
Effective team-working
Report writing and academic conventions
Reflective Practice and how to write reflectively

Private study

Additional Support 52 hours.
Students will be expected to have 12 hours with a workplace mentor appointed by the employing organisation, 32 hours unsupervised learning sets and 8 hours on-line guided learning support through the University's Virtual Learning Environment.

464 hours comprising:
- negotiating and planning project;
- preparing for taught sessions;
- implementing project;
- writing project report.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Learning Journal, individual and group work during teaching sessions, minutes of learning set meetings, individual tutorials to discuss work in progress, homework and preparation for seminars.
