Syllabus

The course will be presented in two blocks of two days, with a gap of approximately 2 weeks between the blocks.

This will focus on managing the re-design of working practices on the shop floor and will include consideration of changing roles and responsibilities, working practices, work structures, control systems and targets. Case study - JW Thornton

Day 2 - Introducing new technology
This will focus on managing the introduction of new technology and will include consideration of why many such investments fail to meet their objectives, and what companies can do to improve their success rate. Case studies - Westland Helicopters, Rolls-Royce

Day 3 - Planning change
This will give course members practical experience of methods for planning change in a collaborative way, and involving key stakeholders. This session will involve group work. Case studies - ICL, DEC

Course members will give feedback on their assignments in the form of individual presentations to the group, followed by discussion of the Lessons Learned. The group will develop a set of 'Good Practice' guidelines and ideas to take back to their companies.

Throughout the emphasis will be on practical group work, using case studies and discussions.
Practical experiences will be included from course members, and from the tutors' experience with Rolls-Royce, JW Thornton, Canon, DEC, ICL, and Westlands.
Ideas and theories will be introduced from socio-technical systems theory.

Course assignment --
'Critically analyse a recent change initiative in your own company (ideally one in which you have been directly involved), describe the approach and what happened. Comment on how the approach could have been improved and how future change initiatives in your company should be managed'.
You will be required to hand in your written assignment 4 weeks after completion of the module. (The word limit is 3,000 words). You will be asked to give a 15 minute powerpoint presentation on day 4 (of this module) and this presentation will be handed in on that day.
