Module summary
This module will introduce the co-production philosophy and approach to organisational development and stakeholder engagement. The co-production process engages people and helps them design their own services and products with the support of the professionals. Co-production regards all stakeholders as assets and seeks to raise the voice of the consumer/user/patient/citizen in organisational design and service delivery. A user-centred design process is adopted, emphasising organisational learning and sustainability.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand where the co-production approach can help develop organisations
- apply a structured process for undertaking a co-production initiative
- evaluate the effectiveness of a co-production initiative
- understand the challenges in sustaining co-production.
Skills outcomes
- Investigative and diagnostic skills in identifying opportunities for co-production in an organisation
- Skills in designing a co-production initiative
- Political and interpersonal skills relating to the management of stakeholders.
Syllabus
Topics to be covered include:
- the origins of co-production
- co-production in the private sector
- co-production in the public sector and in healthcare
- When is co-production appropriate?
- the co-production process (discover, define, develop, deliver)
- evaluating co-production initiatives
- the changing role of the professional/manager
- the changing role of the customer/user/patient/citizen
- co-producing change within organisations.

- Pre-session reading and preparation: 36 hours- Post-workshop reading: 40 hours
- Completion of assessed coursework: 50 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- During the taught sessions participants will receive feedback on their contribution to discussions, case studies and other scenario-based activities.- Outside of the workshops, as well as regular email communication, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions, questions to the tutor and feedback.
