Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand the context of management and medicine and factors that influence relationships;
- evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at producing more productive relationships;
- apply examples of good practice to their own organisation.

Skills outcomes
Investigative and diagnostic skills in analysing the nature of relationships between medicine and management and their outcomes

Political and interpersonal skills relating to the management of stakeholders


Syllabus

Key topics covered include:
- understanding management in healthcare;
- professions and professionalism in health care;
- understanding organisational forms;
- comparative developments in healthcare management;
- clinical leadership and the changing role of doctors in management;
- change management strategies;
- management, medicine and other professions;
- productive relationships and performance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During the taught sessions participants will receive feedback on their contribution to discussions, case studies and other scenario-based activities. Outside of the workshops, as well as regular email communication, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions, questions to the tutor and feedback.
