Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to lead change through evolving frameworks and understand what shapes behaviours in organisations; starting with sense making and ways of seeing, then in becoming effective change agents.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Investigate, reflect on and conceptualise various aspects of their professional and management experience and analyse this with members of their learning group to inform each other about their experience at work and to gain new insights that will contribute to an improved understanding of the student’s own work experience
- Recognise, describe and apply appropriately strategies for relating the content of this and subsequent modules to their work experience; integrating the various perspectives or organisational functioning offered by the range of modules studied

On completion of this module students will be able to:

- Gather information and, present it to others, listening, challenging, providing helpful feedback, reflecting and learning from experience, developing an awareness of self and others
- Exercise appropriately and effectively relationship management, decision making, negotiating and influencing skills


Syllabus

Indicative content
Introduction to advanced management skills
How to work co-operatively and effectively and the benefits of this process
Management of professional relationships: effective decision-making; negotiating and influencing skills
Strategies for developing self-managed co-operative learning approaches
How these can be utilised to enhance the management of creative processes in self and others.
Introduction of a range of interpersonal and critical skills; strategies for embedding these in the programme as it progresses
Participants will be required to apply concepts and approaches encountered in the taught sessions to their own work organisations and projects via class-based debates and the module assessment. Students will use a learning log to demonstrate learning generated from their own work place practices and observations of others.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

During the taught sessions participants will receive feedback on their contribution to discussions, case studies and other scenario-based activities. Outside of the workshops, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions, questions to the tutor and feedback.
