Objectives
The module aims to provide students with the necessary material to appreciate and guide the practice of governance in the NHS (including general frameworks of governance) and the learning to guide their reflection and practice in the years ahead.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically appreciate the nature and guiding principles of .governance in the public sector - its history, development and current status
- Define the role, function, characteristics and dynamics of boards, directors and top teams
- Describe organisational structures and evaluate and comment on associated governance issues
- Describe governance mechanisms/processes and critically evaluate their weaknesses/strengths
- Recognise and apply appropriately in differing contexts the principle academic frameworks of analysis concerning corporate governance

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Introduction to organisational and governance structures including the history, development and current status
How this operates in the health sector
Governing Boards, Directors and Top Teams
Clinical Governance and aligned issues
Case studies and relevant scenarios
The module is delivered through a multi-layered pedagogical approach but the primary mode of delivery will be participant centred structured around readings and reflective sessions, which seek to expose participants to real-life problems and challenges.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided through interactive discussion, and presentation of case study work and practical exercises in the seminar sessions. Outside of the workshops, as well as regular email communication, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions, questions to the tutor and feedback.Methods of assessment
