Objectives

This module aims to give students an introduction to the ideology of patient and public engagement, and an immersion in coproduction as a model of service and systems change in the health and social care systems.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Evaluate and hence recognise where the coproduction approach can help develop organisations
- Apply a structured process for designing and undertaking a coproduction initiative
- Evaluate the effectiveness of a coproduction initiative
- Describe and critically analyse the challenges in sustaining coproduction

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Deploy effectively political and interpersonal skills relating to the management of stakeholders

- Apply a range of investigative and diagnostic skills to identify opportunities for coproduction in an organisation

Indicative content
The origins of co-production
The politics of engagement – consumerism to coproduction
When is co-production appropriate?
The co-production process – in personalized services; in service design; in organizational decision-making.
Evaluating co-production initiatives
The changing role of the professional/manager
The changing role of the customer/user/patient/citizen
Students have the opportunity to apply and demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and methodologies gained in the classroom in a practical way and will be expected to use a learning log to demonstrate learning generated from their own work place practices and observations of others.

Private study

- Pre-session reading and preparation: 36 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- During the taught sessions participants will receive feedback on their contribution to discussions, case studies and other scenario-based activities.
- Outside of the workshops, as well as regular email communication, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions, questions to the tutor and feedback.
