Module summary
The aim of the module is to enable students to acquire and apply the skills necessary to complete a workplace project within a structured format.Students plan, implement and evaluate a project in the workplace. The project is negotiated with line managers in the work-place and agreed by the WBL Unit. Students are also expected to utilise the advice and support of a workplace mentor appointed by the employing organisation.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:Design a feasible project plan which:
- identifies a suitable work-based project;
- formulates problems to be addressed, recognising and, if appropriate, challenging relevant norms;
- identifies personal learning needs and outline a strategy for addressing perceived gaps in skills and knowledge;
- provides a rationale for the project plan;
- specifies a systematic approach employing research methodologies appropriate to the project;
- identifies and addresses constraints to successful completion of the project.
Implement the planned project in the workplace:
- responding creatively to unforeseen flaws in the plan or unpredicted difficulties in the workplace;
- applying appropriate analytical techniques to data generated;
- indicating how obstacles to implementing the project in the workplace have been addressed.
Produce a project report which:
- brings a critical perspective to the planning and implementation of the project and to the analysis of the findings;
- evaluates the success of the project, indicating immediate and longer-term benefits of the project to the organisation.
Reflect upon the learning experience, identify and critically evaluate how new skills and knowledge may be transferred into and utilised within the workplace.

Syllabus
The content of the taught sessions will include:
- Techniques for project planning;
- Introduction to Research Skills in the workplace;
- Effective communication skills for the workplace;
- Developing effective working relationships;
- Effective team-working;
- Report writing and academic conventions;
- Reflective Practice and how to write reflectively.

268 hours of private study:- 40 hours preparing for taught sessions;
- 28 hours working in learning sets researching; and
- 200 hours researching and writing the report.

This will be distance learning support through the University's virtual learning environment, which will be ongoing throughout the module.
