Module summary

This core module offers you the opportunity to understand the strategic motivations and behaviours of organisation, and to apply these principles to the business world. The course covers the key aspects of strategy and includes study of the environment in which organisations operate, the strategic resources and capabilities organisations possess and the options that organisations have in meeting strategic aims. The module will indirectly assist you to prepare for or enhance a senior strategic role.

Objectives

The module aims to provide an introduction to the MBA programme, the academic approach to study at this level and the relative positioning of the other subjects studied on the programme. It also provides coverage of principles of strategic management and addresses the key theoretical and practical issues related to the subject. Differing perspectives and academic debates are considered.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Summarise strategic business issues and interpret and comment on how these may be placed within a strategy-making framework
- Critically evaluate, and articulate the role of key areas of academic and practitioner debate in different contexts

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
Subject specific
- Evidence critical thinking on strategic business subjects
- Apply business strategy concepts to business situations expressed in case studies and seminar discussion and undertake a ‘first stage’ strategic analysis of the company they work for
