Module summary
The module involves completion of a 9 month (minimum) full-time placement working in an organisation in a graduate level role. You find and organise your placements and start date in line with company requirements. During the placement you have a local manager and receive regular supervision and support from a University tutor. You complete a monthly journal of learning and development and receive feedback from the University tutor each month.At the end of the placement you submit a portfolio of work including journal entries and paper-based evidence to substantiate skills development and a reflective statement on your learning and development. This portfolio is assessed and feedback given. You also prepare your CV before and after placement to reflect on and capture your personal development.Objectives
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to enable students to gain and learn from substantial experience of work in undertaking graduate level jobs in organisations and develop skills to enhance their competence, confidence and employability.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify graduate level jobs which are relevant to their degree programme and appropriate to their abilities, achievements and aspirations and prepare applications for these positions
- Present their skills and knowledge effectively to prospective employers (in CVs, letters, applications forms, interviews, selection processes, etc.)
- Apply acquired skills and knowledge to build networks to enhance their career prospects further
Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to;
Transferable: evidence development of their skills in the following areas -
- Cognitive abilities - including enhanced analytical, creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Interpersonal skills - including enhanced communication skills, leadership, social/ cultural sensitivity (towards others) and team-working

Subject Specific: evidence development of their skills in the following areas -

- Job skills specific to the role on the placement
Syllabus
Indicative content
To be agreed with the student, the Year in Industry Team in consultation with the placement provider to ensure that the placement year and opportunities for skills development are within the overall objectives outlined above. There will be additional opportunities for students to attend practical pre-placement briefing courses (run by the Business School) and to also participate in relevant placement provider training schemes too where offered (without receiving additional credit).

Private study
For each 120 credits of study taken, the expectation is that the normal study time (including attendance at lectures and tutorials, self-study and revision) is 1200 hours.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored via monthly completion of an online journal and the collection of related evidence of transferable skills development (by placement tutor).Students will also receive one visit from their placement-tutor (if based in the UK).
At the end of the year students must submit their coursework in the form of a portfolio comprising all elements listed below: 2000 word reflective essay, 24 monthly online journal entries with evidence (unless company confidentiality agreements preclude this), competency-based CV (from before they started and after they completed their placement).
