Objectives

The purpose of the course is to introduce the topics of airline and airport operations in an aviation context. In particular students should be able to:
- understand the basis of airline economics and the structure of the air transportation industry and to make broad, rational assessments of airline economics;
- develop the ability to analyse practical problems in the air transport and related industries having regard to commercial, technical, regulatory and political constraints;
- understand aspects of airport operations management;
- understand the environmental issues relating to airport operations and the management of appropriate monitoring, control and mitigation measures.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have the ability:
- to have knowledge of the sources of funding for the airline industry and to demonstrate how the costs of these funds can be assessed and minimised;
- to have an understanding of the internal and external forces that influences the flow of money in companies within the airline industry;
- to appreciate the concept of financial risk management and its assessment;
- to appreciate how large hub and regional airports operate;
- to understand the role of the regulator (security etc) in airport operations.


Syllabus

AIRLINE OPERATIONS
Formation of business organisations, financial management, project management;
Costs, prices and taxation;
Fixed and variable costs, capital and operating costs, prices and marketing, depreciation and amortization;
Financial analysis, compounding and discounting, cash flows and their analysis by Net Present Value, payback period and by internal and external rates of return, inflation;
Financial statements, profit and loss accounts;
The structure of the air transportation industry;
Demand and supply characteristics of airline services;
Costs and costing of airline fares, pricing policies, yield management;
Air cargo;
The hub and spoke policy, economic regulation of airlines, deregulation, impact of low cost carriers on competition;
The regulation of international air transport;
Non-economic regulations;
The role of the IATA.

AIRPORT OPERATIONS
Airports as operational systems; the UK national airport system; airport management and operational structures;
Operational administration and performance; assessment of management performance;
Airspace management. Airport peaks and rescheduling; methods of describing peaking; implications of variations in volumes; factors and constraints on airline scheduling policies;
Aircraft operating characteristics; departure performance; approach performance; operations in poor weather;
Ground handling; baggage handling; passenger terminal operations;
Cargo operations; airport technical services;
Airport aircraft emergencies; emergency procedures; crisis management; airport security;
The airport operations manual;
Air traffic management; EUROCONTROL - the European Organisation for Safety and Navigation.
