BIOL5166MThis module is approved as an Elective
Module summary
The module is for students with a good knowledge of molecular biology and aims to provide an understanding of the use of high-throughput biomolecular data generation methods emphasising statistical and other skills needed to analyse this data. It will cover technologies for measuring gene expression and regulation (e.g. DNA microarrays, new generation sequencing). Objectives
1. To make students aware of the range of experimental technologies and data analysis methods associated with 'genome scale' investigations of gene sequences, and gene and protein regulation and expression.2. To provide experience of analysing this type of data, and to encourage understanding of the statistical principles involved.
Learning outcomes
1. The understanding of, and ability to use, basic univariate and multivariate statistical methods applicable to large scale genomic and proteomic data.
2. Appreciation of the range of experimental technologies employed (including sequencing, DNA microarrays, mass spectrometry etc.)
3. The ability to carry out statistical analysis of large scale data in sophisticated statistical software packages (e.g. R).
4. The ability to understand research papers in this area.
Syllabus
Genomics, sequencing, DNA microarrays, gene expression measurement and differential expression calculations. Using the R statistical package to analyse biomolecular data. Univariate statistical methods (t-tests, linear regression, ANOVA, general linear modelling, bootstrap and randomisation methods). Multivariate methods (clustering, PCA).
