Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have been given the opportunity to gain experience of planning, conducting and reporting a research project of the type they will undertake in an industry or academic environment.
To enable students to demonstrate their research ability.
To provide skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have acquired:
- in-depth and specialist knowledge relevant to the area of research;
- a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to the area of research;
- the necessary skills to enable them to undertake a major individual research project;
- the ability to interpret data and assess the relevance of their work in an industrial context.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have the following skills:
- formulation of ideas and hypothesis and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
- project management, team work and decision making;
- literature review - critical assessment and utilisation of information obtained from other sources;
- preparation of research plan, identification of milestones and targets, creation of records including progress reports;
- oral presentation and written report preparation.


Syllabus

Individual research project topic (experimental and/or computational in nature) will be selected from the research areas within the three research institutes of the School.
The project work will involve:
- Literature review and background reading.
- Familiarisation with research methodology.
- Planning for the work with timelines and milestones.
- Carrying out experimental/computational work according to the plan.
- Interim report presentation at the end of the 2nd semester.
- Continue with work according to the final plan in the summer term.
- Analysis and interpretation of results.
- Oral presentation.
- Final report writing at the end of the project.

Private study

Students are expected to read relevant textbooks for developing a deeper understanding of the research topic. They should read journal and conference papers to be able to critically assess and utilise information obtained by the other researchers in the field. Report writing.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored via:
- reporting the work done in the previous week to the supervisor in the weekly tutorial classes;
- six meetings with the Module Leader;
- interim report;
- seminar.
