Module summary
As part of this module, senior PG’s, post docs (or academic staff from non-core areas) will be asked to prepare a short lecture course on the broader aspects of their research area. It is anticipated that these willrepresent about six hours worth of lecture material each so that four contributors will be required per year. At the end of each section, the staff member concerned will be asked to propose a topic for debate relevant to their area of interest (food vs fuel for example for a bio-fuels researcher). The students will be required to independently research the topic and then hold a formal debate of it. The module will deliver research led teaching, development of communication skills, confidence and cohort building and research skills. Objectives
The module is intended to make students aware of contemporary issues in sustainable energy from a technical but also financial, environmental and ethical stand-point.Learning outcomes
Students will acquire new technical knowledge relevant to selected sustainable energy topics that could include: wind energy, solar energy, unconventional hydrocarbons. In addition they will learn about the
financial, environmental and ethical constraints on the deployment of such technologies and about the politics of overcoming such constraints.
Syllabus
The syllabus will include a range of renewable energy technologies but these could change from year to year depending on access to speakers relevant to the various technologies.

Private study
Students will be required to take part in a series of debates on contemporary energyissues. The subject areas will be discussed by guest speakers from the PG/PDoc and
academic community. Students will then be expected to research the topic and
produce formal debate notes prior to holding a public debate on the topic. In addition
each student will be required to take one of the four debate topics and prepare a
literature review report on that topic as part of the formal assessment of the module.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored formatively and summatively by review of the debate notesprepared and by performance of the students in the debate sessions. Additional
summative assessment will be via a formal literature review report.
