Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have gained confidence and proficiency in a set of mathematical manipulations appropriate to the study of chemistry and be able to apply these to similar chemical problems.Learning outcomes
The student will gain knowledge in the application of mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, statistics, trigonometry, vectors, complex numbers, differentiation and integration - to solve chemical problems.
Syllabus
- Introduction to basic mathematical concepts including arithmetic: fractions, operations and their inverse, powers, logarithms and exponentials;
- Statistics: errors, the normal distribution, confidence limits and regression analysis;
- Algebra: functions and re-arranging equations; trigonometry; vectors; complex numbers; differential and integral calculus.
- Specific applications of maths in chemistry including unit conversion, kinetics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, spectroscopy and analytical chemistry.
